The Division congratulates Victor Sy on his receipt of the David Perkins Award. The award is made by the Neurospora Research Community in support of an outstanding graduate student.
Sy was presented with the award at the 2023 Neurospora Meeting, which was held earlier this month in Navasota, Texas. In addition to a monetary prize and framed certificate, Sy was invited to give an oral presentation about his current research at the national meeting.
Sy is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Division. As a member of Dr. Patrick Shiu's research group, Sy is using a combination of genetic and molecular biology approaches to elucidate the components of the RNA interference silencing mechanism known as meiotic silencing by unpaired DNA in the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa. His work in the Shiu lab has resulted in three articles in G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics.
Sy's mentor, Dr. Shiu, was the recipient of the David Perkins Award in 1999.
