Conserving grassland diversity in a rapidly changing world

-
Monsanto Auditorium

Global change can cause shifts in plant communities that are difficult to reverse. These observed transitions in ecosystem state may result from crossing tipping points in systems with alternative attractors or could represent alternative community trajectories towards a common stable point. Informed by insights from long-term field experiments, cross-site synthesis, and ecological theory, I will discuss mechanisms that could promote transitions to alternative ecosystem states as well as strategies to prevent diversity loss following perturbations.
