Becoming a Biology major is a fairly simple process, but as with any important decision, one whose implications you should consider carefully. The course of study in Biological Sciences is more difficult than many. You should ask yourself several questions while you are making your decision. Do you like math, chemistry, and physics? These are important support areas for understanding biological processes and concepts, and you will be required to take significant course work in these areas as a part of your degree requirements in Biological Sciences.

research in the fieldBefore making your decision you should visit with one of our undergraduate advisors to talk about why you want to major in biology, your interests and career aspirations. You want to be as informed as possible about classes and related activities.

The field of biological sciences is growing tremendously right now and many wonderful opportunities exist in biotechnology, genetics and molecular biology, law, and environmental issues. As a biology major you may decide to work in a research lab, or take advantage of internship opportunities and summer programs. You should take the time to find out about these opportunities by speaking with an advisor and with one or more faculty members in the Division.

For new MU students:

If you will be a new freshman or transfer student you may mark your intended major on your application to the University. You should try to attend one of the Summer Welcome sessions in order to meet with an advisor to discuss degree requirements and transfer credit (if applicable). You can also register for the Fall semester at Summer Welcome when there will be a better selection of classes available.

For students transferring to MU between the Fall and Winter terms you should make an appointment to see one of our undergraduate advisors as early as possible to discuss transfer credit and courses for the Winter semester. You will want to register for classes as soon as possible during regular registration.

For undecided students and students changing majors within Arts & Science:

If you are undecided, or are currently majoring in another Arts and Sciences department, staff in the Biology in the Biological Sciences Advising Center in 3 Tucker Hall can help you change your major. Phone 882-4068 or email BioAdvising@missouri.edu to set up an appointment to meet with one of our professional undergraduate advisors.

For students in other divisions:

If you are currently a student in another division such as Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources or Health Related Professions you will need first to transfer to Arts and Science in order to become a Biology major. The fall semester deadline for changing divisions is November 15 and the winter semester deadline is April 15. To transfer divisions you must be in good academic standing (not on probation).

To change divisions email BioAdvising@missouri.edu or call 882-4068 to set up an appointment with one of our professional advisors. They will evaluate your prior coursework and you can see exactly how your current credits will apply to a degree in Biology. Our professional advisors will then help you in complete a Transfer of Division form that will be submitted to Arts and Science Advisement Center in 107 Lowry Hall for the Dean's approval. At the same time they will give you the name and contact information of your new Biology faculty advisor.
