poster sessionThe heart of the Honors Degree is an intensive, year-long experience in theoretical, field, and/or laboratory research in any area of biology. You may seek your own faculty research mentor from within or outside the Division of Biological Sciences, or the Honors Program Director can help you find a research mentor. You and your mentor will collaborate to design your own personalized research project.

The honors research experience concludes with a written, oral, or poster presentation describing the results of your research project. This presentation of your work can be made at an on-campus symposium or at a regional or national meeting of a scientific society. Many students present their research at one or more Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Symposia. A written presentation will take the form of a report in a scientific journal.

Three of the credit hours you earn for the research experience can be applied to your BA or BS degree requirements in Biological Sciences. The remaining hours (3-9) count as elective credit toward your undergraduate degree.

Eligibility

in labYou must have completed or be currently enrolled in 20 credit hours in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics and have a cumulative GPA or 3.3 or higher in order to apply to the Honors Program. If your cumulative GPA is between 3.0 and 3.29 you may petition the Honors Program Director for admission.

Award of the Honors Distinction requires both completion of the Honors Research Program and either the AB or BS degree in Biological Sciences with a final overall GPA of at least 3.3. The Departmental Honors Distinction will be noted both on your transcript and your diploma.
