Our goal is to develop scholars and experimentalists with demonstrated research achievement, creativity and independence.

faculty member and postdoc fellowAll of our faculty mentors have exceptionally productive and well-funded research programs and excellent records as mentors for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral fellows. Much of the power of their work comes at the interfaces of traditional disciplines. We encourage our Fellows to work at those very same interfaces.

Publication of research results and the submission of grant proposals are critical elements in the development of an independent research scientist and the demonstration of stature and research accomplishment and independence that is required by many future employers. Our faculty members actively mentor their Postdoctoral Fellows throughout the publication and, when appropriate, the grant submission process. Our Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to publish the research results accomplished during the period of their appointment.

in the labOur Postdoctoral Fellows are strongly encouraged to apply for individual postdoctoral fellowships, as they are available. Postdoctoral fellows may apply for grants as Principal Investigators with the permission of their faculty mentor. The MU Office of Research presents grant-writing workshops to help postdoctoral fellows turn great ideas into strong grant proposals. The workshops cover the development of a compelling research idea, the identification of appropriate granting agencies, and the effective presentation of the research program in the grant proposal. Individual editorial assistance is available.

Faculty mentors provide each of their Postdoctoral Fellows with an annual written evaluation of their performance in all phases of their training program.
