Career exploration and preparationFaculty: We strongly encourage all Postdoctoral Fellows who are interested in an academic career to teach in an informal setting as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students working in their faculty mentor's laboratory. With the faculty mentor's permission, we will offer Postdoctoral Fellows, whenever possible, the opportunity to teach a formal course. This teaching experience provides those Postdoctoral Fellows seeking an academic career with a significant competitive advantage. The MU Program for Excellence in Teaching presents workshops on teaching methods and practices. Workshop topics include pedagogical theory, effective classroom presentation, assessing student learning, effective use of innovative technology in classroom and laboratory instruction and course development. Workshops presented by the MU to the Future Diversity Group help to sensitize instructors to the different cultural backgrounds of students and colleagues. We provide access to a variety of job placement resources including a subscription to ScienceCareers.org Career Development Center. |
