teachers at the Summer InstituteWe have entered the genomics era, where new discoveries and dilemmas emerge with dizzying frequency. To participate fully in societal decisions affecting their lives, students need a basic understanding of modern genetics and of the techniques and uses of biotechnology. For example, amplification of DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful technique used in nearly every aspect of genetics.

Our program begins with the Summer Laboratory: DNA, Development, and Disease, designed specifically for secondary school science teachers and teachers-in-training, to train them in experimental procedures and classroom implementation. In this hands-on environment, PCR technology is used to illustrate basic concepts and new developments in molecular genetics.

Only teachers who have participated in the Summer Institute are eligible to participate in a "virtual van" program during the school year. The van provides participating teachers with high-tech equipment, reagents, and a set of experiments in human population genetics and zebrafish development that they can use with their students. Starting with Kansas City, we have initiated a "Hub" program to develop regional centers of expertise with locally circulating equipment for Van programs.

While all biology teachers and science teachers-in-training may apply, we especially encourage teams of teachers within a school or district.

Note: Only the Mobile Laboratory Van Program is available in 2006-07.
