Columbia Public Schools has named Drs. Anna Waldron and Deanna Lankford “2013 Science Heros.” Dr. Waldron is director of MU’s Office of Science Outreach and a faculty member in the Division of Biological Sciences. Dr. Lankford is program coordinator for the Office of Science Outreach.

“Deanna Lankdford and Anna Waldron have provided many incredible science opportunities to our students,” said Mike Szydlowski, the K-12 science coordinator for Columbia Public Schools.  “The largest opportunity of the year was the first ever CPS/MU Science Sleuth event.  This event marked a huge event where over 1,000 flooded Jessie Hall and several other buildings at MU to have fun with over 30 wild science displays.  Their help in securing facilties, booths, and volunteers was essential to this high impact collaboration.”

Additional science outreach events organized by Drs. Waldron and Lankford this year include the Life Sciences Day for high schoolers, the Science Olympiad State Tournament,  and Ask the Scientist column in the Columbia Daily Tribune. They also have scheduled field trips for students, worked with Science Clubs in the schools, and provided professional development for science teachers.

“Their enthusiasm and dedication have provided CPS students with many rich science experiences and we are very thankful for their commitment to K-12 science education,” said Szydlowski.

Drs. Waldron and  Lankford will be recognized for their contributions at a reception on May 20 from 3:30-5:30 at the Rock Bridge High School Planetarium.

The Office of Science Outreach was established in 2008 as a joint venture between the MU Science Education Center and the Division of Biological Sciences. Ongoing support for the office comes from these two units, with additional program support provided by the MU Office of Research and grant funding from NSF, HHMI, Noyce Foundation, and MDHE.
